Cosmix Symposium on Art and Design for Immersive Media

Schedule for April 9 & 10, 2010

Friday April 9th


Day Sessions will be held at Ringling College of Art and Design Lecture Auditorium, First Floor of the Academic Center, ACA102.

8:30 Registration/Reception

9:00-10:30 Keynote Address - Full-Dome 101


Ed Lantz, President of Vortex Immersion Media and co-founder of IMERSA, presents Full-Dome 101, an introduction to the technical, conceptual, and transformative nature of fulldome production. The talk will outline the basic elements to an understanding of immersive media and its future.

10:45-11:45 Panel Discussion on Careers in Immersive Media



Panel members will include Ed Lantz, Hue Walker of ARTSLab at the University of New Mexico, and Ed White of Sky-Skan who will discuss present and future career opportunities in art and design for immersive media and the future of the industry. The panelists will try to outline how to prepare to enter those careers. Moderated by Charles Kovacs, Director of Career Services, Ringling College of Art and Design.


11:45-12:45 Lunch Break at the Café


1:00-2:30 Hue Walker - Presentation - Concept Development for Immersive Media


One of the leading production artists and teachers of immersive media arts will talk on issues of design, animation, storyboarding and conceptualizing for productions in immersive media.


2:45-4:00 Theories of Design for Environmental Storytelling


Session led by Robert Cooksey, Game Design Theoretician, Ringling College of Art and Design.

5:00 Best of Ringling Opening


6:00-7:30 Dinner Break - Try the best local seafood from Captain Brian’s, local barbeque at the J&J, or a cheeseburger and coke-flavored shake at the Shake Pit, a 1960s high school malt shop still in happy operation. These and other restaurants on or near the route between the Ringling Campus and the Bishop Planetarium.


Evening Sessions will be held at Bishop Planetarium/South Florida Museum.


7:30-9:00 Visiting Artist‘s Presentation


Hue Walker, one of the leading production artists and teachers of immersive media arts will present scenes from Tales of the Maya Skies and a selection of her other work.

9:00-10:00 Planetarium Premiere - Domefest Retro5pective


A compilation of the best of original full-dome theater from around the world. See selections of some of the most inventive and spectacular productions for full-dome projection theater that have been done over the last 5 years. By special arrangement and premiering this evening at the Bishop Planetarium.



Saturday, April 10


All Sessions will be held at Bishop Planetarium/South Florida Museum


12:30-1:30 Technical Session


Sky-Skan personnel discuss the latest innovations in their products, respond to audience questions, exchange with users over technical matters in the production of work for full-dome theater. Discussion of creating a demonstration full-dome theater built around the partnership between the Ringling College of Art and the Bishop Planetarium/South Florida Museum.


1:30-3:00 Community Dome Projects Colloquium


A showcase of work from several community projects this year that experimented with the construction of images for the dome. The purpose of the colloquium is to review this year’s experiments and attempt to set up relationships to create longer, community-centered narrative works for next year’s Cosmix. Community groups interested in making content for the dome are welcome to join the discussion. Moderated by Dr. David Steiling, Ringling College of Art and Design.


3:15-4:00 Domefest Retro5pective


A compilation of the best of full-dome theater from around the world over the last five years.

3:15-4:15 Roundtable on Cosmix 2011: First Person Immersive


A round table discussion to develop the Cosmix symposium for next year. We hope to gather a number of potential stakeholders together to discuss the potentials of a symposium to meet in April 201l including such issues as grant support, and the authoring of a Call for Projects/Proposals/Papers. Moderated by Dr. Doug Chismar, Ringling College of Art and Design.


4:15-5:00 Domefest Retro5pective


A compilation of the best of full-dome theater from around the world over the last five years.


5:00-7:00 Dinner Break - Symposium participants can dine and engage informally at Mateson’s on the Pier just a block from the museum.

6:30-7:15 Storydome (Open Runthrough)


The dress rehearsal for a presentation of domeworks and performances especially created by Ringling students and faculty for the full-dome theater of the Bishop Planetarium.


7:00-9:00 Reception for Cosmix Artists and Symposium Attendees


Join us for refreshments from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. to celebrate the work of contributing artists and symposium presenters.

Cosmix Exhibit closes. Planetarium remains open for a student-mixed art party in the dome featuring live bands and student image work.
